There’s a new baker in town – though they don’t do the baking – you do. Located on Main Street in Roanoke, Grandma Sue’s Pies & More makes delicious pies from scratch that you can buy and take home to bake. Sue (Grandma) Couch, along with husband Roger, have loved baking these popular pies for the past 25 years and they say they hope to continue making them the next 25 years. Their motto is, “We make ‘em, you bake ‘em.”
These hand-rolled and diligently hand crimped, flaky pie crusts are filled to the brim with fruit. Sue and Roger enjoy picking their own fruit that they use in the pies when they can. Their favorite peach for pies is the Red Haven, their favorite apples are Ida Reds and Winesaps and they say that Blue Crop blueberries make the best blueberry pie.
Sue’s personal favorite is the black raspberry and Roger’s is cherry, but they also offer: apple, apple crumb, apricot, blackberry, blueberry, gooseberry, peach, pecan, pumpkin, red raspberry, rhubarb, rhubarb crunch, rhubarb strawberry, strawberry, and sugar cream; seventeen different varieties of slices of heaven. You’re sure to find your favorite. Directions are included for baking the pies but they warn that you should bake them on a baking sheet as they are so full of fruit,
you will need to protect your oven.
Sue says that making these pies is “a labor of love” for them, and they are very grateful to the Roanoke community for helping them find a way to continue this love of baking pies. They hope to add additional products such as homemade noodles and homemade jams when they are able to.

La Dolce Vita is the dream child of me, Laura Wilson, an avid cook and foodie. I started in the kitchen, watching my mother make delicious and fabulous meals almost every night. For her, there was no line between baking and cooking; she did it all and she did it well. I knew this as the only way to entertain and cook, never using a cake mix until I was married when my husband asked for a Duncan Hines chocolate cake. (Yes, we are still married after that shock.)
I founded La Dolce Vita on the premise of European elegance combined with American spirit. La Dolce Vita offers cattering Culinary classes, and in-store dinners, lunches, and special events. We offer a beautiful array or items for your home including special foods and lotions imported from France, Italy, and Spain.
I have attended cooking classes in the States and in Europe, won several baking competitions, and learned much along the way. I have cooked with Patricia Wells, Rick Bayless, and recently returned from Paris, where I passed Level I, II, and III Patisserie at Le Cordon Bleu.

The Roanoke Village Inn has been a Roanoke institution for over 60 years and continues to offer quality food in a fun cozy atmosphere. A great place to go for a casual dinner or to meet friends for drinks, it’s been around for generations and it continues its vibrant existence with a new venture...family dining! This great spot has been a favorite for the parents but other than take-out, the kids have had to wait for their 18th or 21st birthdays to be able to enjoy this neighborhood gem. Not anymore.
The Village Inn has redecorated its upstairs room to be family friendly and smoke free. The kids menu features such yummy kid friendly items like chicken fingers, burgers, mac & cheese and corndogs. Owner and mother of three, Jodie Hunnicutt admits, “I love being able to have families here now – my own kids love it. We’ve enclosed the bar, added new tables, new pictures on the walls and televisions. The room is great for those who’d like to enjoy their dinner with more of a restaurant atmosphere than a bar. It’s the best of both worlds!” There are two entrances to the upstairs family room: one through the restaurant’s back entrance on 2nd Street and the other door side by side with the main entrance in front on Main Street which is well marked as the family room entrance. Just a reminder of the Indiana excise laws – only kids 18 and up with their parents are allowed to enter through the main door.
For those who may not have been to the Village Inn for awhile, it is now open on Sundays with some great Sunday specials; the bar and dining area were redecorated and there are more renovations in the works; and if it’s really been awhile since you’ve been here, they now take credit cards too. A completely new kitchen was installed last year and the menu has adopted some healthier options.
Many of the preparations include grilled, blackened or broiled in addition to the fried. Still the number one favorite item on the menu is the haddock with the steaks a close second though there are those who think dinner doesn’t get any better than their barbecued one pound pork chop. Come in and see what is your favorite. With a variety of delicious entrées, early bird and nightly specials, you’ll have plenty to chose from.
The Village Inn is open Sunday – Thursday 11am-10pm; (Family Room 4pm-9pm) and Friday & Saturday 11am – midnight (Family room 4pm – 10pm.) Reservations are accepted for groups of 5 or more and parties for 20 or more with a minimum two week notice.

Looking for the unique and unusual gift? Something special for that special someone? Bruce Chaney's Antique Shop is in its 25th year very unique from others in the area as it is a true antique shop; no collectibles, no vintage, but true Period furniture (we're talking Chippendale, Hepplewhite, etc.), Victorian pieces (furniture and dining) and Country furniture (like 1830's Windsor chairs.) One of a kind treasured items that can't be purchased in a box store.
Bruce has been selling antiques since 1989 but has been collecting them since the 1950's when visiting relatives took him to an estate sale and he was hooked. "A true antique," explains Chaney, "is at least 100 years old, and especially includes items made before the Industrial Revolution in the 1830's. After then there were more goods produced by machinery; before then items were handcrafted or made in smaller numbers." Chaney does go on to explain that he makes an exception to the 100 year rule for Art Nouveau and Art Deco items of the early 1900's to 1930's because of their beautiful lines and style.
Currently, Chaney has a large selection of cut glass pieces. Dating back to the Victorian times, craftsmen cut designs into glass of many forms and patterns creating "beautiful art pieces that are useful," says Chaney. Along with the many pieces of silver that he carries, "these works of art are useful, not something to be put on the shelf and looked at." The cut glass includes vases, bowls, dishes and pitchers; his silver collection has hard to find tea pots, sugars and creamers, trays, cutlery and more. These silver pieces according to Chaney are elegant and long lasting and make caring, timeless gifts.
Because of the nature of the shop, the inventory is constantly evolving. Items he currently has in the shop are oil paintings, salt glazed crocks and butter churn with cobalt blue decoration, a small mustard painted immigrant chest, a magnificent 50 piece set of Steuben glass, bronze figures from the late 1800's on black marble plinths and furniture from different eras displaying it all.
Antiques by Bruce Chaney is located north of Roanoke in the old Jackson Township #1 School building built in 1915. The address is: 10979 North Roanoke Road on the corner of 1100 North, a short block west from US24. It is open 10am - 5pm Monday - Saturday and Sundays by appointment at 260-672-9744.
We are also open by appointment

In the middle of the main block of downtown Roanoke is Katharos Art & Gift shop. Owners Kathy and Chris Bailey have worked very hard to fix up and improve the building and it is now an inviting shop full of charm.
Filled with different types of artwork from more than 15 different artists, Kathy says she likes to be able to showcase and help display work, especially from artists that haven’t shown before. We showcase work from local talent and probably 95% of what is in the shop is local Northeast Indiana. We also like to find unique and unusual items that I haven’t seen around here and have added some artists from a little further away with hand crafted pieces including metal and ceramic clocks and wire sculptures. There are oil, acrylic, watercolor, and photography works to hang on walls; there is jewelry and pottery for sale to use; and there are also textiles with quilts, scarves, pillows and aprons; items that are knit, sewn, and pieced. Nicely displayed on antique pieces of furniture, the shop has a warm and comfortable feel.
Kathy makes fused glass pieces, a talent she developed from an interest in creating jewelry from lamp work beads. With the purchase of a kiln, she expanded to art fairs and then galleries in Indiana, Chicago, Michigan and Ohio. Wanting to display her work herself and not have to travel to shows, led Kathy to locate both personally and professionally here in Roanoke. “We love being here in Roanoke and enjoy being part of a smaller community,” she says. In addition to her jewelry, she makes larger items such as art glass pieces for interior design and functional pieces like plates, platters and candle holders.
The shop is divided into two sections with the front being the area to display the works of art and the open back half reserved for classes. Classes include tips on hanging and arranging artwork, making a fused glass pendant and creating a Christmas bracelet with charms and basic wirework, bead frames and caps. Kathy books small groups with private classes whether a group of Girl Scouts working on their jewelry badge or a group with an interest in learning to make something new. The minimum number to book a class is 5 and the space can handle up to 10-15 depending on the activity and the age of the participants.
