Grandma Sue’s Pies and More

Located on Main Street in Roanoke, Grandma Sue’s Pies & More makes delicious pies from scratch that you can buy and take home to bake. Sue (Grandma) Couch, along with husband Roger, have loved baking these popular pies for the past 25 years and they say they hope to continue making them the next 25 years. Their motto is, “We make ‘em, you bake ‘em.”

These hand-rolled and diligently hand crimped, flaky pie crusts are filled to the brim with fruit. Sue and Roger enjoy picking their own fruit that they use in the pies when they can. Their favorite peach for pies is the Red Haven, their favorite apples are Ida Reds and Winesaps and they say that Blue Crop blueberries make the best blueberry pie.

Sue’s personal favorite is the black raspberry and Roger’s is cherry, but they also offer: apple, apple crumb, apricot, blackberry, blueberry, gooseberry, peach, pecan, pumpkin, red raspberry, rhubarb, rhubarb crunch, rhubarb strawberry, strawberry, and sugar cream; seventeen different varieties of slices of heaven. You’re sure to find your favorite. Directions are included for baking the pies but they warn that you should bake them on a baking sheet as they are so full of fruit,
you will need to protect your oven.

Sue says that making these pies is “a labor of love” for them, and they are very grateful to the Roanoke community for helping them find a way to continue this love of baking pies. They hope to add additional products such as homemade noodles and homemade jams when they are able to.

Roanoke Village Inn

The Roanoke Village Inn has been a Roanoke institution for over 60 years and continues to offer quality food in a fun cozy atmosphere. A great place to go for a casual dinner or to meet friends for drinks, it’s been around for generations and it continues its vibrant existence with a new dining! This great spot has been a favorite for the parents but other than take-out, the kids have had to wait for their 18th or 21st birthdays to be able to enjoy this neighborhood gem. Not anymore.

The Village Inn has redecorated its upstairs room to be family friendly and smoke free. The kids menu features such yummy kid friendly items like chicken fingers, burgers, mac & cheese and corndogs. Owner and mother of three, Jodie Hunnicutt admits, “I love being able to have families here now – my own kids love it. We’ve enclosed the bar, added new tables, new pictures on the walls and televisions. The room is great for those who’d like to enjoy their dinner with more of a restaurant atmosphere than a bar. It’s the best of both worlds!” There are two entrances to the upstairs family room: one through the restaurant’s back entrance on 2nd Street and the other door side by side with the main entrance in front on Main Street which is well marked as the family room entrance. Just a reminder of the Indiana excise laws – only kids 18 and up with their parents are allowed to enter through the main door.

For those who may not have been to the Village Inn for awhile, it is now open on Sundays with some great Sunday specials; the bar and dining area were redecorated and there are more renovations in the works; and if it’s really been awhile since you’ve been here, they now take credit cards too. A completely new kitchen was installed last year and the menu has adopted some healthier options.

Many of the preparations include grilled, blackened or broiled in addition to the fried. Still the number one favorite item on the menu is the haddock with the steaks a close second though there are those who think dinner doesn’t get any better than their barbecued one pound pork chop. Come in and see what is your favorite. With a variety of delicious entrées, early bird and nightly specials, you’ll have plenty to chose from.

Open Sunday 9am-12pm for Brunch, Sunday – Thursday 11am-10pm; (Family Room 4pm-9pm) and Friday & Saturday 11am – midnight (Family room 4pm – 10pm.) Reservations are accepted for groups of 5 or more and parties for 20 or more with a minimum two week notice.

The Roanoke Village Inn will now be serving brunch on Sundays from 9am - 12pm! Menu favorites include; Prime Rib & Eggs, Brisket Hash & Eggs, Cinnamon Blueberry French Toast Casserole, The Stack That Killed Elvis and Chicken & Waffles. Drink features include; Ultimate Bloody Mary, Mimosa Flights and Hot Toddy.
